Goodwin and Byrne’s EFL Championship Predictions

After a weekend of Fa Cup action it is back to the league as we have 12 enticing encounters that Jack Goodwin and Sean Byrne are going to predict.

WIGAN VS QPR

Wigan have been on a dangerous slide down the division and they need results quickly or could be pulled into a relegation dogfight. I think they will win this one after good business in the window

GOODWIN PREDICTS 2-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-2

BIRMINGHAM VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Martin O’Neill got his first win on the weekend and they need results to get into the top six. The Blues had a very good result away at the Liberty Stadium and their determination and fight for the team was fantastic. They will equal each other out.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 1-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-3

BRENTFORD VS BLACKBURN

Tony Mowbray’s men are looking like they could be real contenders for the top six. They’ve done well to keep hold of Bradley Dack. Brentford have been on a decent run as of late.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 0-0

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-1

BRISTOL CITY VS SWANSEA

The Robins are the in form side at the moment and they will carry on that form with an impressive victory over the Swans

GOODWIN PREDICTS 3-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 2-1

HULL VS STOKE

Hull and Stoke were both shocked on the weekend as they were lacklustre and never got going. These looks set to be a highly entertaining game with lots of goals.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 2-2

BYRNE PREDICTS 0-2

IPSWICH VS SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Both teams have made impressive additions in the window and have bolstered their defences. I still think Ipswich will survive but I don’t think the good form will begin here.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 1-2

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-2

MILLWALL VS ROTHERHAM

It was a great win in the Fa Cup but Neil Harris’ men cannot afford to get distracted as survival has to be a priority. Rotherham’s form has tailed off and they need to get results quickly.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 2-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-0

READING VS ASTON VILLA

I’m not convinced that the Royals are going to stay up this season and the result in midweek was not good enough. Saying that, they made some great signings in the window. Meanwhile, Villa are still lacking consistency.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 1-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 0-2

SHEFFIELD UNITED VS BOLTON

Sheffield United can not lose these type of games and they have to be like flat track bullies this weekend. Scott Hogan was a superb signing.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 3-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 3-0

WEST BROM VS MIDDLESBROUGH

This will be a strange game as they play totally opposite football. The Baggies still don’t convince me and I think Boro will still go up this season.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 1-2

BYRNE PREDICTS 0-2

LEEDS VS NORWICH

Big big game in the Championship this season. If Leeds win then they really look set for promotion. Norwich may crumble if they don’t get a result in this one.

GOODWIN PREDICTS 2-1

BYRNE PREDICTS 1-1

Championship Team of the Week

Here’s our pick of the best XI from this weekend in the EFL Championship…

Goalkeeper: Bartosz Bialkowski

The 31 year old had a sensational game for the Tractor Boys, away at Aston Villa. Predictably, his goal was peppered with multiple shots and he made an incredible 11 saves in the game! It wasn’t enough to get anything from the game but it was a brilliant performance.

Right Back: Elliot Bennett

The Blackburn Rovers man was sublime in his performance as he was confident on the ball, and he successfully took the ball down the right hand side multiple times. Bennett was tenacious and he kept Kamil Grosicki quiet throughout the game.

Centre Back: Ben Davies

What a showing from Davies! Not only was he patient on the ball but he made one of the best clearances that I’ve seen in a long time. He put his head on the line as he stretched to keep the ball out. He was Man of the Match at the Bet365 Stadium.

Centre Back: Jack Rodwell

The former Man City man has been playing in an unfamiliar role in the centre of defence. His confidence on the ball, led to a clean sheet and he even got on the scoresheet as he fired past David Marshall.

Left Back: Joe Mattock

It was always going to be an enduring and tough day for the Millers. Mattock battled hard as he won all six of his aerial duels and he kept young Jack Clarke quiet all game. He didn’t deserve to be on the losing side this weekend.

Right Midfield: Matty Cash

A fantastic performance from Cash as he proved to the Forest fans that he deserves to be starting every single game. He scored the second goal at the City Ground and was a constant threat.

Centre Midfield: Mateusz Klich

Klich has really flourished under Bielsa this season and he scored the two important goals as the Whites returned from the New York Stadium with all three points. I would say, it was his best showing of the season.

Centre Midfield: Alan Browne

Arguably the most underrated player in the second division, was at it again this weekend. He opened the scoring at the Bet365 Stadium and he has become a goalscoring machine as of late. Furthermore, he put the defensive shift in as his tireless determination and effort led to a 2-0 victory for the Lilywhites.

Left Midfield: Joe Lolley

Martin O’Neill got his first victory for the Reds as Lolley opened the scoring with a confident finish. This was once again, another great performance and he has been on fire this season!

Striker: Billy Sharp

It really is sensational how Billy Sharp, a 32 year old, has scored 18 goals in 23 starts! It was once again an impressive performance at Carrow Road as he scored two goals and hit the woodwork with his other shot. He is a true Blade and not many players can still do it at his age.

Striker: Tammy Abraham

Tammy showed why he is the top scorer in the EFL Championship this weekend. It was a double for Abraham on Saturday as he peppered Bialkowski with shot after shot. If it wasn’t for the Pole playing out of his skin, then Abraham could’ve genuinely had seven goals! He definitely needs to be playing in the Premier League next season.

Championship Team of the season

We are just over midway through the season and with 2019 in full swing it’s time to look at who has made the Championship XI so far…

Goalkeeper: Niki Mäenpää

Mäenpää has been very impressive at Ashton Gate, following a move from Brighton in the summer. The Finnish international has started 23 of their matches and a 1-1 draw at Pride Park showed his credentials. He made a string of saves and he has proven that he is good enough to be a first team goalkeeper in England.

Right Back: Ryan Shotton

Shotton has been unlucky with injuries this season but when he has started he has been strong in standing up to fast wingers and his defensive contribution has led to Middlesbrough conceding the least amount of goals in the league. He rarely has been beaten in the air and he is an old school full back, in the sense that he concentrates on his defensive work rather than his attacking runs.

Centre Back: Liam Cooper

Marcelo Bielsa’s sides usually struggle in the defensive stage but Leeds United have flourished this season with the the commanding presence of their captain leading the way. Cooper can read the game very well and he has protected young Bailey Peacock-Farrell behind him.

Centre Back: Pontus Jansson

How could I leave the Swede out? Leeds United have the best defensive partnership in the league and it would’ve been criminal to leave him out. He is comfortable on the ball and he brings it out from the back. He never loses an aerial duel and he is a threat in the opposition box.

Left Back: Kristian Pedersen

The €2.5 Million signing has been a rock at the back for the Blues this season. His 6 foot 2 frame has led him to be dominant in the air and he is equally as good at intercepting the ball. He makes a contribution in the final third, with his tricky dribbling. Birmingham fans love the tenacity from him, making Pederson a perfect fit for the left-back role at St Andrews.

Right Midfield: Jarrod Bowen

The young Englishman has contributed to 17 goals this season and it is no surprise that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in his services. For the last two seasons he has been scoring week in week out and when he gets the opportunity he always finds the back of the net. He likes to dribble at opposition defences but he shows the discipline to help out at the back. He is a constant threat and he deserves a move to the Premier League.

Centre Midfield: Pablo Hernandez

Bielsa has got the best of the Spaniard and he has contributed to 17 goals in 20 starts this season. For a 33 year old, this is a sensational stat. He is a class above the Championship and he continually creates chances with pinpoint passes and a superb vision. His set piece delivery is outstanding and he shows many similarities to Kevin De Bruyne. Hernandez likes to cut inside and he has arguably been the best player in the Championship this season.

Centre Midfield: Oliver Norwood

Does Norwood have any weaknesses? Blades fans would argue he doesn’t after his performances this season. He continues to be patient on the ball and makes key passes. His long shots have tested keepers many times this season and his set pieces have been fantastic. Norwood enjoys his defensive side of the game and loves a tackle. He has been an essential player for Sheffield Utd this season. This impressive form has earned him a permanent move to Bramall Lane, in the current window.

Left Midfield: Joe Lolley

Nottingham Forest have enjoyed the qualities of Lolley so far. His skilful dribbling is useful as he likes to cut inside on the full back and create chances for Lewis Grabban. He isn’t afraid of getting stuck in and he will work hard for the team. He will be hoping that he can regain his place in Martin O’Neills side.

Striker: Lukas Jutkiewicz

In my opinion the Blues striker has been the best player in the Championship this season. People will look at the goals and see that his tally of 10 is not that impressive but it’s the runs of the ball, that open up the space for his teammates which are providing them with chances. More impressively, he has won an average of 12 aerial duels per game! He likes to flick the ball on to Che Adams and he is constantly seen in the opposition box defending set pieces. The Englishman is having his best season yet and he is a dream for Garry Monk.

Striker: Tammy Abraham

You only have to look across the road for the next best striker. The top goal scorer in the Championship this season has scored 17 goals in just 22 games. He is too good for the second division and he will want to lead Villa into the Premier League. He rejected a move to Wolves to stay with Aston Villa in the January transfer window but he has the credentials of being a Premier League striker. He can finish fantastically, dribble with pace and win balls in the air! What a player!

This was extremely difficult for me to choose and certain players are unlucky to miss out! Especially with the vast amount of strikers that have performed well this season. Matt Phillips, Jack Grealish, Mark Beevers, Callum Robinson, Alan Browne, Will Vaulks, Shaun Williams, Emiliano Buendia, Dwight Gayle, Ahmed Hegazi, Neal Maupay and Timm Klose were all very closely considered.

Let us know what you think in the comments below and whether you agree or disagree with the choices I have made. Whilst your at it, go and follow @thebigdivision on Twitter!

EFL Championship: What each team needs in the window

Where does your team need strengthening? Who do you need to sign and who will be the ideal signing?

Aston Villa:

Aston Villa need another centre back. There has been no issues scoring goals, but the defence is leaky with 43 goals conceded in just 27 games.

Who should they sign? – Ezri Konsa

A player that Dean Smith used to have at Griffin Park could be the ideal signing for Dean Smith. He likes his team to be comfortable with the ball at the back and the young 21 year-old centre back could protect the Villa backline. He could be expensive but the owner should be prepared to part with £15 Million to secure the services of Konsa.

Birmingham City:

The midfield needs a bit more creativity to link up with the impressive Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz. Centre Midfield should be a priority.

Who they should sign? – Grant Leadbitter

Transfers have been very difficult due to the current transfer embargo. They will have to look to free transfers and the Middlesbrough captain is free to discuss terms with any other teams as his contract is running out in the summer. Birmingham should look to secure the services of the heavily experienced midfielder. He has only played one game this season and he could be crucial for the Blues.

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn have taken to the Championship very well and they are outsiders for the Play-Offs. Even though Ryan Nyambe has been doing well, they could need cover at Right Back and a winger is a priority too. Mowbray was also without four central defenders for the Fa Cup replay with Newcastle.

Who they should sign? – Patrick Bauer

Blackburn should renew their interest in the Charlton Centre-Half. Charlton rejected a 500,000 bid in the summer from Rovers but the German has been comfortable this season and deserves the step up in divisions. Hal Robson-Kanu and Paddy McNair should also be potential targets to re-strengthen Rovers side.

Bolton Wanderers:

On-field matters have taken a back seat as the club continues to have all sorts of problems. It is hard to see many incomings coming in this window. A striker should be a priority as they are the lowest scorers in the league and they need a major injection of goals to stay up.

Who they should sign? – Gabby Agbonlahor

It has come to a desperate time at Bolton and they need goals to stay up. The 32 year old free agent could be the answer to those problems. He recently revealed that he had rejected offers from Championship clubs because he didn’t want to play against his beloved Villa but surely he needs to accept one soon or his career is just going to fizzle out. With Ken Anderson unlikely to spend any money on signings, they will have to turn to the free agents list and Agbonlahor looks like he could be a shrewd signing.

Brentford:

Maupay has been scoring goals for fun but he’s going to leave eventually and the Bees need a back up striker to help when he is out injured, suspended or sold.

Who they should sign? – Hany Mukhtar

Brentford usually look abroad for their signings and Mukhtar is a young attacking player. He can play Striker, Centre Attacking Midfield or even out wide. This season he is currently playing at Brøndby where he has contributed to 9 goals in 17 games the Danish Superliga.

Bristol City:

Bristol need to improve in their attacking options as they have only scored a meagre 34 goals in 27 games. If they want to get Play-Offs they will need a striker to score at least ten goals for them.

Who should they sign? – Josh Maja

Maja has been linked with a move to the Premier league but in my opinion this could be a bit too soon for the 20 year-old. He has scored 14 goals in 24 games for Sunderland in League One and he may be best suited to moving to one of the best young teams in the Championship. Lee Johnson has proven with Bobby Reid and Jonathan Kodija that he can develop and improve young strikers and I think this would be a good signing for all parties.

Derby County:

Derby haven’t kept enough clean sheets this season and they could look for a replacement for Richard Keogh. Elsewhere, they could do with more creativity in the middle of park.

Who they should sign? Reece Oxford

20 year-old Oxford is looking for a move away and Derby County could offer him a chance for first team football, possibly on a loan. He has previously played on loan with Reading and Borrusia Monchengladbach and it would be a good move for him and the Rams. Derby should also look to signing Lucas Piazon. He did very well with Fulham in this division and they could even sign him on a permanent and he isn’t much use to Chelsea.

Hull City:

The Tigers have been on a sensational run and they may need to bolster up front if they want to carry it on and become Play-Off contenders. Frazier Campbell has done well with 9 goals in 18 but he may need some competition as Chris Martin has failed to impress in his ten games for Hull City.

Who they should sign? – Shane Long

Shane Long’s last four goals have come under four different Southampton managers! This shows his lack of consistency but it also may be time for him to take a step down to the Championship. A move to his old team could be dangerous, as his rapid pace will frighten defences. Limited finances are an obstacle so this may have to be a temporary loan move.

Ipswich Town:

The team needs strengthening everywhere. They have been bottom of the league for the whole season and they have already started making reinforcements. Alan Judge, Collin Quaner, Will Keane, Callum Elder, James Collins and Simon Dawkins have been the signings they have made so far.

Who they should sign? – Liam Bridcutt

The Scottish international has struggled for game time with Nottingham Forest this season and could be open to a move away if a bid comes his way. The 29 year-old would be a great signing for the Blues.

Leeds United:

Kiko Casilla is reportedly close to signing and this would be a great signing for the Whites. Bailey Peacock-Farrell has done good enough but Leeds need a top keeper to stay consistently at top of the league. A new winger should be a priority.

Who they should sign? – Jefferson Montero

The Ecuadorian has struggled for regular game time and he is yet to start a game at the Liberty stadium. Bielsa is rumoured to be interested in signing Montero and this would be a great move as he is one of the fastest players in the league!

Middlesbrough:

Boro need an injection of pace and the loss of Adama Traore hampered their promotion chase.

Who they should sign? – Bojan

Bojan was frozen out of the Stoke City squad by Gary Rowett and Jones has opted not to select him as of yet. Bojan has attacking flair and Premier League quality. He is the ideal replacement for Braithwaite and he could lead them to automatic promotion.

Millwall:

The Lions need to improve out on the wing. The lack of a quality out and out winger has truly dampened Millwalls season.

Who they should sign? – Ben Marshall

Marshall was simply brilliant when he joined Millwall last season. He is now at Norwich and he isn’t getting any playing time. This would be an astute move from Neil Harris if he can acquire the services of Marshall.

Norwich:

Norwich have been impressive but have had to come from behind multiple times so improving their defensive resolve must be a priority if they want to return to the promised land.

Who they should sign? – Will Vaulks

Rotherham’s star player has been exceptional this season and he is playing fantastically week in, week out. He can score some great goals and is very quick at intercepting. At 25 years old he should be playing at a bigger team.

Nottingham Forest:

Lewis Grabban is Forest’s only option up front and if he gets injured the Reds could be lacking a goal scoring threat.

Who they should sign- Callum Robinson

He is currently injured but he was in the form of his life earlier in the season. He was scoring goals for fun and was one of the only bright sparks in the Preston team. PNE will not want to lose him but O’Neill was very fond of Robinson, when he was the manager of ROI. O’Neill could tempt him to the City Ground as they have big ambitions of Premier League football.

Preston North End:

PNE have made some very good signings from lower divisions so far but Neil has signalled his intent for more incomings. Darnell Fisher has been poor this season and Tom Clarke’s natural position is centre back so they should target a new right back.

Who they should sign- Tom James

The 22 year old nearly signed a deal with West Brom in the summer but they were unable to agree contract terms. James has been playing in the fourth division with Yeovil Town and Preston should target another young player. This is the typical PNE business model, they like to sign young players from lower league teams and they usually greatly improve them.

Queens Park Rangers:

Loan signings have helped but they are still a bit light on the goalscoring front and they possibly need to strengthen that is they want to reach the Play-Offs.

Who they should sign?- Nahki Wells

Wells on a permanent deal would be fantastic for the Hoops. He links with the midfield well and is a threat up front. Wells already plays for QPR but signing him on a permanent will be helpful.

Reading:

Reading have lacked cutting edge and confidence in the final third. An out and out winger should be beneficial and could keep them in the Championship.

Who they should sign? – Wenderson Galeno

Jose Gomes could use his links to bring the Rio Ave winger to the Madjeski Stadium. Galeno is currently on loan from Porto and he has been Rio Ave’s best player this season. He’s only 21 year old and could be a very good signing for a struggling Championship side.

Rotherham:

If Rotherham are to stay up, then they need another winger and defender in the window. It would be a miraculous achievement for them to stay up with the leagues weakest squad.

Who they should sign? – Callum Johnson

Zak Vyner has struggled at right back this season and the Millers could look to bring in young, Callum Johnson from Accrington Stanley. He has been rumoured with a switch to Preston North End but he would be more likely to start if he moved to Yorkshire instead.

Sheffield United:

The Blades have got themselves in a really promising position and they need to make sure they have quality in depth. Right wing back is possibly an area they could look to improve.

Who they should sign: Glen Johnson

This may be a very peculiar choice but I honestly believe Johnson has a lot left in his tank and he would be a decent acquisition for any Championship side. He will give Sheffield Utd some much needed experience and he will be able to guide the young players and make sure they stay in the form they are in. They need to avoid any extended winless runs if they want to secure the top two places.

Sheffield Wednesday:

The owner, Dejphon Chansiri has said that the club could be placed under a transfer embargo for the second time in less than a year, which will make transfer incomings extremely difficult. A new centre back would help though.

Who they should sign? – Philipp Wollscheid

Sheffield Wednesday will have to look at the free agents list and the German 29 year-old is currently without a club. After a move with Stoke, didn’t work out it could mean he could be apprehensive about returning to England but Wednesday need all they can get and he proved at Bayer Leverkusen that he is a good player when he wants to be.

Stoke City:

It’s all hands on deck at the Bet365 Stadium and things need to improve quickly. Nathan Jones has walked into a mess and his first two games have showed no sign of it stopping.

Who they should sign?- Tyler Adams

Cuco Martina has not been consistent so far this season and a replacement for him would be necessary. Tyler Adams has just joined German side, Red Bull Leipzig from New York Red Blues but it is unlikely he will start from the off. Adams is seen as one of the best young players in football today and he could be the player Stoke needs. A loan deal could benefit all parties. Trust me, the young 19 year old is something special.

Swansea City:

Swansea at times have lacked creativity this season and with teams in for James and Montero, they may have to start looking for replacements. Money is tight at the Liberty Stadium and Potter has not been given much to spend, if any!

Who they should sign? – CJ Hamilton

With the budget limited, Potter should look to the lower leagues. At Mansfield, CJ Hamilton is looking like a very promising asset and with age on his side, he would only improve under a manager as committed to youth like Potter is.

West Bromwich Albion:

Central Midfield needs a more youthful outlook as Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry and Jake Livermore are all 29 or above. West Brom should be an attractive side to sign for as they look ready for promotion.

Who they should sign?- Alan Browne

If the Baggies want an injection of pace, determination, skill and passion then look no further than Deepdale. Browne has consistently been Preston’s best player for the last two seasons and he certainly deserves the move up. However, I doubt PNE would be willing to part with him on the cheap. However, as I watch him most weeks, I really would vouch for Browne to get a move up but he could stick with Preston and become a hero for many seasons!

Wigan Athletic:

Dan Burn has just departed so Wigan need another centre half desperately. The signing of Pilkington was very clever and he could do very well at the DW stadium.

Who they should sign? – Jack Whatmough

Paul Cook should look to one of his former sides as he seeks defensive resoluteness. Rangers have reportedly been interested in signing him and he is known as one of the best young defenders in the English Football league. Although, in the last 24 hours he has just signed a contract extension, which may make it difficult for anyone to sign him.

Gaffer Guide: Manager Performance table

The Championship table currently has Leeds United sitting at the top of the roost but does this mean Bielsa is the best manager?

At the other end of the spectrum is Ipswich Town and the experienced Paul Lambert. Is Lambert the worst manager in the league?

To answer these questions I have developed the manager performance table. I will analyse how well each manager is doing and I will take various different matters into context.

These will include, their position in the table with regards to the amount of money they have spent and the squad at their disposal. Managers who have brought through youth and given them a chance will also be rewarded.

It would be unfair to judge Jose Gomes, Nathan Jones, Steve Bruce and Martin O’Neill this early into their reign so Paul Clement, Gary Rowett, Jos Luhukay and Aitor Karanka will all be included.

Manager Performance Table

1. Chris Wilder- Sheffield Utd

Wilder is once again doing a marvellous job with the Blades. After leading them back to the Championship, securing 100 points in the process, Wilder is challenging for promotion to the Premier League and they have never had a better opportunity to do so. This time last season they looked all set to at least reach the Play-Offs but they went on a horrific run which led to them eventually sliding out of the top 6.

Sheffield United are second in the league and they are massively overachieving. On paper, they are mid-table side at best but Wilder is getting the most out of experienced pro’s like, Oliver Norwood, Enda Stevens, David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp.

To make it even more romantic, Chris Wilder is a Blades fan and he wears his heart on his sleeve as the club means so much to him. The players are so galvanised each and every week and credit has to go to Chris Wilder and that is why he is sitting top of the table.

2. Daniel Farke- Norwich City

An unknown commodity when he joined the Canaries is most definitely known in Norfolk now as his side are third in the league. Delia Smith kept faith with Farke after a disappointing 2017-2018 season and they are reaping the awards now.

Norwich City are a yo-yo club who are known to bounce from Premier League to the Championship. However, all the foundations are set for possibly an extended stay in the Premier League if the German can get them promoted.

Daniel Farke has introduced youth and flair to the side and many of the players will be unheard off to the casual fan. Jamaal Lewis, Ben Godfrey, Felix Passlack, Maximilian Aarons and Todd Cantwell have all featured prominently throughout this season and they are all 20 years old or under!

A mid-table side on paper has blossomed with attacking flair, youth in abundance and entertaining football.

3. Garry Monk- Birmingham City

Monk is now at his third Championship side in as many seasons but this one looked to be most difficult on paper. The club is currently locked under Transfer Embargoes meaning Birmingham have limitations on who they can sign. This should’ve been a bitter blow to Monk and his staff but they have been doing incredibly well considering the circumstances.

A small squad is made up of 25 players with four of them being goalkeepers. This theoretically should’ve made the season really difficult for Monk but his Birmingham side have thrived with striker Lukas Jutkiewicz being the star player and in my opinion being the player of the season in the EFL Championship.

Birmingham are now 8th in the league and they have a real good chance of making the Play-Offs. If they can pull this off, Monk will boost his CV massively, as a side that should be lower mid-table is really thriving under difficult circumstances.

4. Marcelo Bielsa- Leeds United

Put aside the whole ‘spygate’ saga and Leeds United’s season has been full of positives and entertaining football. Largely made up of the players from last season, they are now top of the league and signing Bielsa looks to be the best bit of business they have done in the last decade.

His team play entertaining football, being patient and playing out from the back. His methods certainly seem to be working and their sub bench from Fridays game against Derby County sums up how well they have been performing. All seven players on the bench were 20 or under and Bielsa has not complained once about the lack of options at his disposal.

The defensive partnership of Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are playing superbly and they are keeping clean sheets. Pablo Hernandez has contributed to 17 goals and assists this season, making him their standout player.

Even though typically a club of Leeds’ stature should be performing at the top end of the Championship, this side is by no means the strongest in the league. A team that should be realistically finishing just outside the Play-Offs is looking like they can finally put an end to Leeds’ fans anguish and push on to the Premier League.

5. Lee Johnson- Bristol City

Bristol City are doing things the opposite way round this season. For the past few seasons, Bristol have started strongly but the wheels have fallen off when they got to the mid way point. However, this season after a summer of incomings and outgoings, Bristol City have gone from a slow start but they have now been on a sensational run which has led them to 7th in the league.

No losses in 10 has represented a great return and if they can keep their form up, they could finally reach the Play-Offs. Stephen Lansdown, the Bristol City owner must be given huge credit for the patience he showed when Johnson was going through winless runs. Adam Webster has been the standout player for them.

6. Steve McClaren- QPR

4 losses in his first 4 league games in charge meant the ‘wally with the brolly’ was under huge pressure at the start of the season. The late loan signings of clinical Nahki Wells and Tomas Hemed produced an upturn in form and QPR haven’t looked back.

A nice mix of youth and experienced players have meant QPR have been comfortable all season and are outsiders for a Play-Off spot. The defensive duo of Toni Leistner and Joel Lynch is solid and that is where the base of the foundations have been built.

A mid-table finish would indicate a good return as Tony Fernandes has cut back costs and is not pumping money into club as much as he once did.

7. Tony Mowbray- Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn have not looked back following their promotion last season. Bradley Dack, Charlie Mulgrew and David Raya have really flourished in the second division. Mowbray is excelling and consistency has been brought back to Ewood Park.

Young midfielder, Lewis Travis has featured in the last couple of weeks and Mowbrays faith in the youngster has not gone unnoticed.

Blackburn have definitely got their man and they should look to keep hold of him for many years.

8. Frank Lampard- Derby County

Although his side had a footballing lesson on Friday, Lampard has taken to his first job like a natural. The lack of funds meant that in the summer the recruitment featured multiple loan signings and this has not hampered Derby County.

Harry Wilson, Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount have the standout players at Pride Park and Derby fans will be dreaming of signing them on permanents. Although the Rams are not massively overachieving, a Play-Off finish will still represent a great first season for Frank and they look likely to do just that.

Lampard has his side playing good football with the ball on the floor and it’s some of the best football they have seen in years.

9. Alex Neil- Preston North End

I’m anticipating a few supporters, including North End fans to be a bit shocked about that one but hear me out. After an impressive 7th placed finish last season, which was massively overachieving with the shoestring budget PNE operate on. Neil is still arguably overachieving.

Preston fans and pundits alike both predicted a Play-Off push this season but is this realistic, when you consider the amount of money he has had available in his time at the club.

Many of the players he has signed have come from lower leagues and the League Of Ireland. Making Alex Neil’s job not easy at all. Considering the amount of injuries PNE have had this season then Neil is doing a marvellous job as it was only a couple of weeks ago that 12 key first-team players were sidelined! Could they be doing better? They could, especially when you take previous years finishes into account but with the poor luck they have had this season, Preston fans are still happy with the young Scottish manager.

10. Nigel Adkins- Hull City

Turmoil. This is a word that has surrounded Hull City for years now and up until 2 months ago it looked like it was only going to get worse as Hull were languishing in and around the relegation zone. However, an upturn in form has much improved their season!

One loss in 13 games has bumped Hull right back up the league and their fans are dreaming of a Play-Off finish. When looking at their side, they are accompanied by some fantastic talent and Jarrod Bowen is the key player in that team with him contributing to 16 goals this season.

Adkins has got them playing with confidence and positivity is finally surrounding the KC stadium. Adkins should be very proud of the job he is doing and he will want a second stint in the Premier League after how harshly Southampton sacked him.

11. Darren Moore- West Brom

In Darren Moore’s first job as a manager, he is shining. The old ‘ West Brom way’ has been re-introduced and this is shown with the 55 goals that have been scored in their 27 games.

This is just over 2 goals scored per game and they also boost the strongest goal difference. West Brom are playing with real flair and arrogance.

The reason for Moore being bang in mid-table is because luckily they were able to keep hold off many of their first team players following the relegation which has left him with a very strong squad.

In my opinion, with the likes of Aston Villa and Stoke struggling, West Brom should be targeting Automatic Promotion at the very least. Any less will be disappointment at the Hawthorns.

12. Tony Pulis- Middlesbrough

Tony Pulis is effective and he knows how to get results but it can be ugly so the results come at a cost. Regularly you will find them just launching the ball onto Hugills head and looking for runs. This team really is the definition of a Pulis side.

Although the play is dull and pre-historic it is effective and it gets constant results. Middlesbrough have conceded the least goals in the league with 19 goals let in, in 27 games! They are currently 5th in the league and whilst the other teams let leads slip, Middlesbrough know how to keep clean sheets and in my opinion they are most likely going to up at the end of the season.

So even though the football can be dire at times, it balances itself out as Pulis really is a genius at getting results.

13. Neil Harris- Millwall

After an impressive season which nearly culminated in Millwall securing a Play-Off place, their current position could be considered as an underachievement. However, Harris shouldn’t be a victim of his own success as keeping Millwall up should be in itself as an achievement.

Boasting one of the weakest squads on paper is not an accomplishment many Lions fans will want to celebrate but they are operating on a limited budget and Harris should be greatly appreciated for the job he is doing.

The recent run of form which has returned 4 wins in their last 5 should be a big boost for Millwall and they will be hoping that they can replicate the second half of the season run they went on this time last season.

14. Paul Warne- Rotherham

Keeping Rotherham up would be an incredible achievement for Warne and as things stand they are currently 2 points above the dreaded relegation zone.

It isn’t pretty football from the Millers but nor should it be. Rotherham fans shouldn’t expect their team to be able to compete with the big teams when a lot of the teams have one player that are worth more than their whole squad.

Will Vaulks has stood out this season as one of the best players in his position and Rotherham need to keep hold of him if they have any chance of survival.

15. Paul Cook- Wigan Athletic

Wigan have struggled for consistency throughout the season but they are still doing well, once again when you consider the budget etc.

Cook has led the Latics back to the Championship and it really is about consolidation now. They have to stabilise themselves in the Championship for a couple of seasons before they can even start to dream about the Premier League again.

Anthony Pilkington is a tremendous signing and he showed his credentials in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Paul Cook should still be credited for doing a good job and they should have enough to steer away from the relegation dogfight.

16. Aitor Karanka- Nottingham Forest

Recently departed, Karanka was doing a decent job at the City Ground. Play-offs was the minimum target when you consider the 25 million they spent in the summer. They looked on course for that before the wheels came off and Karanka walked.

Neutral fans would’ve backed Forest for the Play-Offs with the Spaniard doing it once before with Middlesbrough.

The football was not always exciting and there was too many draws along the way but Karanka should’ve been able to see the season out at the very least. It will be interesting to see how Martin O’Neill lasts at the City Ground and it would be no surprise that if we are sitting here, this time next year and Forest are looking for another manager.

17. Phil Parkinson- Bolton Wanderers

The circumstances with Bolton are extremely difficult for any manager to work with. The survival last season was a sensational attainment.

Forest Green Owner (Dale Vince) was particularly damning and brutal in his assessment of Bolton Owner (Ken Anderson). Vince described Anderson publicly as “a rogue chairman, a slippery character and untrustworthy”.

This is all going on in the background whilst Parkinson is trying to get on with his difficult job of keeping Bolton up. Parkinson must be commended for the loyalty he has shown to Bolton as he has not walked away from the job, which I’m sure many managers would do if they were working under similar circumstances.

Unfortunately, the team is not doing the required work on the pitch and they have the unwanted stat of being the lowest scorers in the League. Phil Parkinson must try and muster some goals if they want to stay up.

18. Paul Lambert- Ipswich Town

Relatively new to the club is former Canaries boss, Paul Lambert. It has taken time for the results to get going but the 1-0 win this weekend will have been hugely encouraging for the Tractor Boys.

Lambert needed backing in the January transfer Window and the signings of James Collins and Alan Judge suggest they could pull off the impossible and stay up.

Performances on the pitch have improved since Lambert joined but the results must follow suit. I think they will and I’m backing an Ipswich survival.

19. Graham Potter- Swansea City

Potter brought lots of enthusiasm and hope in abundance after his success in Sweden with minnows, Osterstunds. At the moment, the results have not been particularly encouraging but Potter lost key players in the summer and he has developed some fantastic young talent.

Joe Rodon has been one of their best players this season and he is really flourishing in Potter’s system of playing out from the back. Elsewhere, Courtney Baker-Richardson was on the scoresheet this weekend and that move typified the football Potter wants to play.

Currently 13th, there is no reason for why Swansea can’t have a strong second half of the season as they still possess Premier League class in Mike Van Der Hoorn, Kyle Naughton and Jefferson Montero.

Even though Swansea are underachieving it would be premature to even consider sacking him as the Englishman is developing Swansea’s style and producing youth for the future.

20. Dean Smith- Aston Villa

The Villa fan left Brentford after Steve Bruce was sacked from the Villains. In what started as a promising start, with lots of goals and victories the wins have dried up and they have only won one in their last eight games.

The defensive steel is completely gone and the 3-0 loss at the DW stadium this weekend was one step too far. Don’t get me wrong, this was no easy job to walk into and Smith isn’t a miracle worker but Aston Villa on paper have one of the strongest squads on paper and they will never go up if they can’t defend.

They play an extremely high line and a ball over the top is always catching James Chester and James Bree out and Smith needs to be careful.

A few whisperings are coming out now that Aston Villa may have made the wrong appointment and even though Smith’s teams always play wonderful football, his teams have never challenged for the Play-Offs and it was a gamble the Villa board took.

They shouldn’t consider sacking him yet but the Play-Offs has to be the minimum target for a club like Aston Villa.

21. Thomas Frank- Brentford

When Frank came in, Brentford were 7th in the league and they had a real look in at the Play-Offs, with their striker (Neal Maupay) being the top scorer.

Brentford are now at the other end of the table in 17th place. A promising run of no losses in six has seen them move away from any relegation talk but Brentford have to keep this up to ease the pressure on Frank.

The Bees should be finishing in the top ten when you consider the young talent they have influencing the game. 8 points separate them and the top 10 so it’s in touching distance but this good run of form needs to continue.

22. Jos Luhukay- Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls were massively underachieving under the Dutch manager but some sympathy does have to be placed with Luhukay. He was only able to bring in a handful of players due to the transfer embargo and this damaged the plans Luhukay had for the side.

Granted, his man-management skills clearly weren’t working as he fell out with star players such as, Kieran Westwood and Sam Hutchinson and they were frozen out of the squad.

Ever since he was sacked on the 21st of December, the results have improved and the football is more entertaining at Hillsborough.

23. Paul Clement- Reading

Reading sacked Clement after less than nine months in charge and he left the Royals 21st in the table. After only four wins in 20 games, the Berkshire club decided to removed him as their manager.

In his time at the Madjeski Stadium, he was unable to identify a style of play and this Reading side has quality in depth which means he was massively underachieving.

This could possibly be his last job as a first team manager following, three sackings at Derby, Swansea and now Reading.

24. Gary Rowett- Stoke City

Now to the bottom of the league and it’s the man who Derby County fans know as the ‘snake’. Just last week, Rowett was removed as Stoke manager after an failed experiment.

Boasting the strongest squad for not just this season but arguably in any Championship season, Stoke have underachieved.

They are currently 15th in the league and after their 3-1 loss this weekend against Brentford, it showed it wasn’t just one quick fix. Play-Offs wouldn’t even be good enough for the fans of Stoke and it looks like they won’t even finish in the top half!

Stoke may not be bottom of the league but Gary Rowett definitely is.

Gaffer Guide: Why Marcelo Bielsa lacked respect for the English game

Leeds Owner, Andrea Radrizzani has apologised to Derby County for the ‘spygate’ saga which has overshadowed the Leeds versus Derby match, that took place on Friday night

Marcelo Bielsa admitted before the game that he had sent a member of his coaching staff to watch a closed training session at Derby’s Morley Road training ground on Thursday after the Rams reported a suspicious looking man to police.

The incident has caused a furore, with critics accusing Bielsa and Leeds of, at worst, cheating and, at best, breaking an unspoken sporting code.

Leeds released a statement on Saturday saying the club will “look to work with our head coach and his staff to remind them of the integrity andhonesty which are the foundations that Leeds United is built on”.

Bielsa seemed not bothered about the incident when questioned after watching Leeds won the game  and says it is a practice he has been using for years.

“Yesterday I talked to Frank Lampard and he told me I didn’t respect the fair play rules,” the Argentine told Sky Sports following the game.

I have a different point of view but the important thing is what Frank Lampard and Derby County think. I didn’t ask permission from Leeds United to do it so it’s my responsibility.

“Without trying to find a justification, I’ve been using this kind of practice since the qualifications for the World Cup with Argentina.

“It’s not unlawful, it’s not illegal. We’ve been doing it publicly and we talk about it in the press. For some people it’s the wrong thing to do, and for others it’s not.”

So why is it wrong?

Bielsa has brought a lot of great qualities to the Championship and Elland Road but this particular method needs to be left behind as it’s not needed in the English game.

In a sense, it’s cheating and I was massively surprised when I heard the revelations. No remorse whatsoever was shown in his interview and his attitude regarding the whole situation is disrespectful.

It is unclear whether this is the first time they have spied on someone this season. However, surely if he’s done it to Derby and he’s openly admitting it then he’s most likely done it to every other team this season.

There is no law in place saying this is illegal but surely the values of sportsmanship should be worth something. Frank Lampard was furious and it begs the question of whether Leeds have done it all season and if they have, is that a reason for why there top of the league? That would be a big statement to make but it is holding an advantage over the 23 other teams and there is no doubting that.

Should Bielsa and Leeds be punished? Technically he hasn’t done anything wrong but morally he has. If the FA want to stamp this out then they need to create a law to say that this is illegal.

Gaffer Guide: Who should be the next Nottingham Forest manager?

Nottingham Forest parted company with Aitor Karanka on Friday Morning, announcing that he “has asked to be released from his contract”.

In a statement on Karanka, Forest said: “The club have agreed to this request and the terms of departure have been agreed. Both parties wish each other every success for the future”.

Karanka leaves Nottingham Forest in 7th place, 4 points off the play offs.

I will discuss the bookmakers favourites to suggest whether they will be good appointments for Nottingham Forest, as they look to enter the Championship Play-Offs.

Slasiva Jokanovic:

Many of the managers rumoured with the Forest job are exactly the same as the ones that were linked with the Stoke City job. The Serbian is no different as it was reported that Stoke City wanted Jokanovic as their manager but he was not interested in the job. Jokanovic has simply managed two sides in the Championship, Watford and Fulham. Both times he has gained promotion.

It doesn’t get more simple than that and that stat alone should make him one of the top gaffers in the search for the next manager at the City Ground. It was only this last summer that top European clubs were rumoured to be considering him for their next manager. These teams included, Chelsea and AC Milan.

In his home country of Serbia he won the double in back to back years with Partizan. When Jokanovic is backed, he gains results. However, this could be an issue, as Nottingham Forest heavily spent in the summer with 25 million pounds. Forest will now have to tread very carefully and make sure they do not go under any transfer embargoes.

Two months ago, he was sacked as Fulham manager with them sitting bottom of the Premier League table. He was not given time to turn their fortunes around and he would’ve been disappointed to have had this sacking on his impressive CV.

Slasiva Jokanovic is a fantastic manager and he should definitely be considered. It is worth noting that at Fulham he was heavily backed by Mr Khan and I’m sure Nottingham Forest will be prepared to back him.

They will have to be careful though, if they do not achieve promotion then it could all end sourly with Financial Fair Play getting involved.

Aitor Karanka spent a large sum of money and Forest already have a top 6 side so big changes are not necessarily needed.

Martin O’Neill:

66 year old Irishman, Martin O’Neill could be offered the Nottingham Forest job. O’Neill has only just been removed as Republic of Ireland manager after five years at the helm. He was, for the majority of his reign, very successful, as he was able to get them through to the knockout stages of the European Championships in 2016.

Elsewhere, O’Neill is fondly remembered by both Wycombe and Leicester fans. At Wycombe he was able to do the double promotion by winning the Conference and then getting promoted from the old Third Division, the following season. This led to him getting the Leicester City job.

O’Neill in his first full season was able to win the Play-Offs, thus gaining promotion to the Premier League. This was impressive on its own but he also guided Leicester City to the League Cup final three times, winning twice!

He was able to test his managerial credentials in Scotland with Celtic. He was was successful as he was able to win the Scottish Premier League in 3 of his 5 seasons, whilst also finishing as runners up in the UEFA Cup. He managed Aston Villa after this and he is remembered as their best manager in the 21st Century as he consistently finished in the top six. England footballer, Ashley Young credits him for getting the best out of him.

O’Neill’s CV really stands out and there is no doubt he is vastly experienced in many different circumstances. Although, the task of leading a team out of the second tier of football was one he achieved, it is worth noting this was 23 years ago and football has moved on a lot since then.

Is O’Neill past it? His 2018 with ROI suggests it, as they went on a dismal run, which has led them to being relegated to League C in the UEFA Nations League. O’Neill will point to the fact that this is one bad year in an impressive record.

I think, Nottingham Forest should consider Martin O’Neill but I think he could wait around for a better job to come as his records suggest he could still be managing in the Premier League.

Carlos Carvalhal:

The next manager in the betting is the Portuguese, Carlos Carvalhal. 17 teams in 20 years suggests he is a journeyman but this could suit Nottingham Forest as they rarely hold onto a manager for longer than a year. They would hope he could get them promoted and then they could possibly move on and find a new manager.

Carlos was loved and adored by Sheffield Wednesday fans as he brought them back to back Play-Off campaigns. Unfortunately, he was unable to see them over the final line and get them promoted to the big time.

Carvalhal was swiftly appointed by Swansea City last season. Although they went on some fantastic runs, the season ended with little fight and they were eventually relegated to the Championship.

The Portuguese is respected with the media as he conducts himself in the correct manner and he carries much charisma with him.

I’m not expecting Nottingham Forest to stick with their next manager for a lengthy period, so I think Carvalhal would be a great appointment in the short term and I would expect him to turn the tide and end the season in the Play-Offs.

Leonardo Jardim:

The surprising name in the betting is another Portuguese: Leonardo Jardim. The reason this is particularly surprising is that only two years ago he was leading Monaco into the Semi-Finals of the Champions League. In the same season, he won the Ligue 1 title, impressively overcoming big spending, PSG.

In Jardim’s first season in charge, he was able to lead third-division side, G.D. Chaves into the Portuguese second tier. He followed this up with achieving another promotion with S.C. Beira-Mar, this time to the Primeira Liga. In the top division, he was doing superbly well with S.C. Beira-Mar but he stepped down to take the bigger job of Braga.

He led Braga to the third position in his first and only season – posting a record of 15 consecutive league wins in the process. His record may have Forest fans drooling but it’s only going to get better.

Jardim replaced current Barcelona manager (Ernesto Valverde) at the helm of Greek side – Olympiacos. He led the league by a considerable 10 points but was controversially removed midway through the season, robbing him of the Superleague Championship.

Jardim returned to his home country to become the new Sporting Lisbon manager and with a very young and inexperienced side, he led them to second position.

Jardim’s managerial skills are exciting and he likes to play attacking football with young players. If Nottingham Forest are able to pull this one off, then I will be very surprised.

Leeds were able to do the unthinkable and attract Marcelo Bielsa, so there is no reason why the City Ground can’t attract one of the finest young managers around.

Nigel Clough:

The son of legendary manager Brian Clough, is wanted by a big section of the Forest supporters.

Clough is also a Forest legend from his days as a player at the City Ground, where his Father, Brian, achieved unprecedented success as a manager.

Nigel Clough was offered the Forest job in January 2017, but elected to remain with Burton Albion and successfully keep them in the Championship after their first season at that level.

Clough has done exceptional things with Burton and they absolutely adore him over there. The issue with Clough taking charge, is that he must be appointed because of his record not because of the ’emotional factor’. Former Forest player: Stuart Pearce, was appointed manager in 2014 and even though he was able to get an initial good start, it quickly fizzled out and he was sacked in 2015, with his reputation slightly tarnished.

The same applies to Nigel Clough if he is to be appointed – he must be given the job because of the success he has had with Burton. I wouldn’t be surprised if Clough turned down the job again. He will see that the owners want instant success and the next manager will most likely not be given time. The days of expecting a manager to get time at Nottingham Forest are long gone.

Opinion:

Some very interesting options are available and it is not clear what route Forest are going to go down. Will they go for experience with accomplished Martin O’Neill? Or perhaps they will want the ‘ emotional factor’ and go for Nigel Clough. The most exciting and new option is if they they are able to lure Leonardo Jardim to the City Ground.

If Jardim is available and willing to move to England’s Second Division then I think Nottingham Forest should make him their man. I doubt that this could happen, considering Jardim was sacked by Marinakis at Olympiacos for supposedly sleeping with the owner’s wife. It is not clear how true this statement is but it is strange in itself that Jardim was sacked when they were 10 points clear at the top of the league and I’m sure Jardim will still hold a bit of bitterness for not being able to collect his winners’ medal.

Therefore, I think Slasiva Jokanovic and Carlos Carvalhal are the men Nottingham Forest should consider for their next manager role. If they are able to pull off either one of these, Forest may have a bright future.

Gaffer Guide: Why Aitor Karanka resigning, is bad news for Nottingham Forest

Aitor Karanka has departed as Nottingham Forest manager after crunch talks at the City Ground last night.

Karanka has been in charge of Forest for just over 12 months, but it is now over after a meeting with Forest’s board and owner Evangelos Marinakis.

If rumours are to be believed, Karanka was going to be sacked, hours after their 3-3 draw with promotion favourites, Norwich City. However, he received a vote of confidence and he was able to beat Leeds Utd on New Years Day.

According to Sky sources, Karanka asked to be released from his contract.

Forest have said in a statement: that the relationship was irreparable, despite attempts to resolve the ongoing issues between the two parties. It is claimed that the former Middlesbrough manager was ‘distant’ in the last two weeks of his reign.

So why is this bad news? I will discuss the ongoing issues with the Forest hierarchy and the capability of Aitor Karanka’s managerial credentials.

No long term managers means there must be something wrong within the core of the club:

Marinakis took over as Nottingham Forest owner when he completed a transaction in May 2017. In his year and half in charge of Forest, he has overseen two managers – Mark Warburton and Aitor Karanka. Neither manager has been given a sustainable amount of time to turn around their fortunes and Forest are quickly becoming a ‘fire at the first sign of trouble’ sort of club.

A more damning statistic is when you look at the list of managers they have had since 2011. In the last 8 years, Nottingham Forest have the shameful statistic of having 11 managers! These managers include, former England manager, Steve McClaren, former Man City manager Stuart Pearce and current Scotland manager Alex Mcleish.

If none of these managers were able to get Forest to the promised land then what’s saying the next will?

In this time, money has been spent freely and each gaffer has been backed by the board. It is clear that it’s not just one quick fix to return Nottingham Forest to the Premier League and something within the club needs changing.

According to sources, a pre-scheduled visit from Evangelos Marinakis, the club’s Greek owner, included a meeting with Karanka and his players, in which a stark, strong message was relayed. That message was effectively “promotion or nothing”.

This meeting from Marinkas was arguably not needed and could’ve led to Forest’s poor run of form just before the Christmas period.

Aitor Karanka is a good manager:

Karanka won 16 of his 52 games in charge, whilst noting that only five of those defeats have come in the Championship this season. The Spaniard came in and Forest were flirting with relegation and this season, he leaves them in seventh place, just four points off the the play-off’s.

It would be premature to say that Karanka had stabilised Forest but he had at least made them a more competitive outfit as a team who were competing at the right end of the table.

Elsewhere, Aitor Karanka was in charge of Middlesbrough from 2013 to 2017 and he led them back to the promise land of the Premier league.

Many similarities can be made from his reign with Middlesbrough to his reign at the City Ground. He was appointed at both teams, midway through the season and kept them clear from relegation. In his second season at the Riverside, Karanka was unable to find any consistency and that led to a respectable play-off place. They unfortunately lost to Norwich but, there was no Play-Off hangovers as they recovered the following season and were automatically promoted.

Two and half years was enough time for Karanka to get Middlesbrough back to Premier League after a seven year absence.

Aitor Karanka was conservative and pragmatic in his approach as he proved his time spent with Jose Mourinho was all worth it the end.

Therefore, based on previous success, Karanka deserved the time to at least finish the season and even though Karanka eventually resigned, the pressure from the board got too much and Marinakis was not fighting to change his mind and was happy to look elsewhere.

I honestly believe, Aitor Karanka is one of the best managers for the Championship as he knows how to keep clean sheets and be effective in the transfer market.

The squad is Karanka’s:

Another issue I see resonating from the City Ground is that in the summer Nottingham Forest spent 24.69 Million on various incomings.

The board backed the manager and he was able to have a mini clear-out and he brought in players with vast experience and young talents that were brought to the City Ground for the near future.

Will the players be happy with their manager leaving? I highly doubt it and it could lead to more players asking to leave.

Out of the squad of 31, over half were his recruits as he made 22

new signings. The question begs that whether the next manager they appoint, will also want another clear-out. Nottingham Forest will have to be careful, as they will not want to be stung under Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City have both been placed under transfer embargo’s, making it extremely difficult for either club to improve their playing staff, as they have had to turn to loans and free transfers as a last resort.

It is risky water Forest are treading and they certainly do not need another manager coming in wanting to splash the cash.

If this happens, Nottingham Forest’s future will look bleak, as their upcoming transfer windows may be plunged into uncertainty.

Opinion:

All in all, it is still difficult to see whether the news that comes from today will affect Forest negatively and the Reds will be hoping that they can continue their Play-Off push and potentially book a Wembley date.

This situation has become all too regular for Nottingham Forest and it comes as no surprise to me that Karanka was unable to see his tenure out.

Karanka’s spell at the City Ground was one that began with great hope and optimism- and one that did deliver plenty of positives and, indeed, progress!

In comparison to recent seasons, things were and are far better at Forest. There has been improvement under Karanka. The attitude of the club hierarchy has been shaped on the back of their own expectations and ambitions, not on the inconsistencies or instability in the past.

The City Ground tells a story of needless chop and change and I’m going to make the bold statement that if Aitor Karanka stayed at Nottingham Forest, they would’ve finished in the top 6, thus earning a Play-Off spot!

Gaffer Guide: Why Jose Gomes may take Reading down.

Reading appointed Portuguese boss, Jose Gomes following the dismissal of Paul Clement. He has a big job on his hands as they are winless in ten games and are currently five points from safety as they sit in 23rd place.

Gomes has no experience of English football, but has been part of the coaching staff at Benfica and Porto. He leaves Rio Ave in 6th place in the top Portuguese division.

I am going to take a look at his coaching credentials and find out whether he will be good enough to keep the Royals in the Championship.

No long-term stints in his last 15 years:

When Jose Gomes was appointed the new Reading manager, many fans of the Royals would have taken to Google search, as the majority would have never heard of Gomes before. The first thing many fans would’ve looked for, was the previous clubs he had been involved with.

Surprisingly, the stat that stands out is that he has either managed or coached 16 teams in the last 15 years! The variety of teams include, Pacos Ferreira, Uniao Leiria, Panathinaikos, Videoton, Al-Taawoun and Baniyas. I would be surprised if even the most hardcore football fans have heard of at least three of these teams.

Obviously, the teams he has managed, do not correlate to him being a poor manager but it does show that these clubs have not been too keen to keep him longer as their manager.

At Baniyas and Videoton he decided to move on to different challenges and even move abroad on different occasions. He showed this when he swapped Rio Ave, who were doing reasonably well in his home country, for Reading.

The lack of loyalty suggest that Gomes is not always committed to the cause and he will jump at any opportunity to move to another team, possibly for more money.

His longest stay at any club is for 52 matches, so he is not one to stay at a club for too long a period.

Arguably, this could lead to doubts with the Reading board for the transfer window as they will not want to back a manager who will not spend a long tenure at the Madejski Stadium. The current signings to this point prove the suggestion I’m trying to make. Two loan signings: Ovie Ejaria and Lewis Baker hardly provide hope that Jose Gomes is going to be backed.

Jose Gomes wasn’t first choice:

Rumours were rife that Reading were reportedly keen on bringing another Portuguese manager- Luis Castro. Castro opted to stay in his homeland and remain the Vitoria de Guimarães manager.

Reading were prepared to get Castro and Portuguese media claimed, that the Royals’ Chinese owners were prepared to tempt Castro to England, by offering an 11 Million Euro salary package.

That sum of money is ludicrous for Championship football, especially when it was being offered to an inexperienced manager. The scattergun approach, which the Royals took, was particularly surprising and it’s very strange that they targeted Portuguese managers for no apparent reason. Available managers included Steve Bruce and Martin O’Neill; Reading may have been better off using the ‘know what your going to get’, sort of approach rather than the gamble they have taken.

Nigel Howe took over as CEO and many Royals’ supporters expected him to get a manager for the ‘Reading way’. Howe was meant to help rekindle the glory days of the past and to re-establish links with the local community that had been severed under the previous reign of Gourlay.

Does Jose Gomes spark similarities to the managers of the Reading glory days? I highly doubt many similarities can be found between him and the likes of Steve Coppell and Brian McDermott!

His formation doesn’t fit with the squad:

Given that Rio Ave have used 4-2-3-1 in every game so far this season, it is safe to assume that this will be the formation that he will use. In his four games so far as Reading manager he has used this formation, backing this claim up. Hopefully, Gomes should get the best out of John Swift as when he’s at his best he can link up play and make the game so much more exciting. Gomes gives his players creative freedom, so he will be hoping this will be beneficial to attacking midfielders like Swift.

The downside to the formation is that it forces Leandro Bacuna, Ady Rinomhota and Liam Kelly into the holding midfield role. They are all very different players in their own right and it will be interesting to see whether they will have the self discipline to perform effectively for the remainder of the season.

In the 4-1 home loss against Swansea, Ady Rinomhota was ineffective, regularly found losing track of his men and being caught too far up the pitch as he likes to push up and create things at the other end of the spectrum.

Opinion:

There should be a little ray of hope for Reading though. Reading still possess a very strong side, complimented with good technical passers and experienced defenders. On paper, Reading realistically should be finishing in the top ten and this season has been hugely disappointing for them. Many Royals’ fans will have been hoping for at least a mid-table finish but former Derby manager, Paul Clement was unable to invoke any particular style of play at the Madejski Stadium.

They are not the patient, possession-based side we saw under Jaap Stam, yet nor are they a counter-attacking outfit.

Jose Gomes must identify a style of play and regain the confidence in the players. Can he do it? I’m not convinced and I’m expecting Reading to be in League One for the 2019-2020 season. This would be a catastrophic relegation and not one many outsiders would’ve expected at the start of the season.
